Our compost facility is located in Chemainus, BC and has been operating since 2009. Our facility is in full compliance with all provincial (OMRR) and municipal (WSML) regulatory authorities and is staffed with highly trained personnel who hold certifications such as, “Certified Compost Facility Operator”, through the Compost Council of Canada and “Certified Technician”, through Applied Science Technologists and Technicians of British Columbia.
Our compost facility is the first of its kind in North America to take the GORE in-vessel forced aerated composting system and completely enclose it on asphalt within fully sealed, fabric covered buildings. This type of composting system ensures a high quality finished compost product while also providing odour control.
We are committed to minimizing odours emitted from our facility. All compost production, including the maturing and screening processes are performed in our fully enclosed facility for odour control purposes. Our compost facility also uses bio-filter technology to substantially reduce odours emitted from our facility.
There are many environmental benefits for composting organic waste. These include:
- Residential garbage is approximately 40% organic waste – composting keeps this organic waste out of the landfill.
- Organic wastes that end up in landfills decompose without oxygen and produce methane, a greenhouse gas that contributes to global warming.
- Compost is a nutrient-rich fertilizer that helps soil retain moisture.
- The use of compost as a fertilizer means less chemical fertilizers, which can run off into the water table.
